What's Happening in Northern Norway?

28 June 2007, Harstad, Festspillene i Nord-Norge

In 1966, OTTAR BROX (Oslo) wrote a book that has become a sociology classic. In 2006 MORTEN STRØKSNES (Oslo) used the same title for his book. In this Transborder Café session, the two meet to discuss what actually has happened in Northern Norway. Join us for an exciting discussion on current issues. The debate moderated by political editor for Harstad Tidende, ODD RIKARD OLSEN.

Artist AMUND SJØLIE SVEEN (Oslo) will add to the discussion with his performance «United States of Barents». What do people in the Barents region have in common – except the notion of living in the periphery? What happens now when the region experiences a potential change from periphery to center? Why are we all talking English to each other? Is the opening of the new IKEA-store in Happaranda a major event in the history of the Barents region? Welcome to the brave new world of the United States of Barents!
