Sami-Salami

04 April 2009, Linz 2009, Mediendeck of OK Kulturhaus

By this title we highlight the perseverance and at the same time fragility of the Sámi culture.

A nenets-girl is holding to the reindeer sledge. The wind is blowing hard, but she is holding strong – despite that she is sleeping. “Hold on!” – you try to help her while watching this video piece “Anisja Sleeping” by Yvette Brackman from Copenhagen. Yvette Brackman began her project «The Catalyst» in Lovozero on the Kola Peninsula, northwest Russia, during spring 2006. She initiated contact between local craftspeople in Lovozero and the Spanish shoe company Camper. What is the result of such a contact – for Camper, for the local population in Lovozero and for the artist? You will not hear the story of “Lovozero-Camper case”. You will act the story, as you will get a role of a local craftsman, a Camper representative, local entrepreneur, advocate, artist, etc., and will become part of the play written and directed by Yvette Brackman.

You will get into a trance when you hear joiking by Johan Andresen from Nesseby. And get back to life when musician Espen Sommer Eide from Bergen will present his “Language Memory Project” where he compiles a dictionary or database of Skolt Sámi language samples. The archive kills the living language in order to preserve it, but at the same moment creates its potential alchemical transformation into new life. To crown it all you will see a video “Mun Rahkistan” where Serge Gainsbourg’s “Je t’aime” is performed by a Norwegian artist Geir Tore Holm in Sámi language.

The Transborder Cafe is concluded with the Russian- Sámi -Norwegian world music project “The Bridge” with the queen of the Russian world music Inna Zhelannaya, Sámi guitar virtuoso Roger Ludvigsen, sax-player Oleg Mariakhin and the Link trio from the northernmost region of Norway Finnmark (in cooperation with Musikk i Finnmark).

Food: Sámi soup bidos is served.
