Transborder Concert

28 May 2008, Swissotel the Bosphorus, Istanbul, Turkey

MORY KANTE, ARTO TUNCBOYACIYAN, RAGNHILD FUREBOTTEN and the Arctic Subcircle Orchestra.

A musical border-crossing exercise, featuring 3 world music celebrities and the 13-piece Arctic Subcircle orchestra. Expressive melodies and strong rhythms bringing us back to the deepest roots of mankind.

The Transborder Concert is based on an idea of mixing music traditions from 3 continents in a creative process, inspired by the reminiscence of long gone pathways. The outcome of the experiment will probably be that we add a few new pieces to the everlasting riddle of cultural sources. But it will most certainly be a confirmation of the unique human desire and ability to spend time and effort on musical innovation – a desire reaching over all times and borders. A series of concerts can not solve global problems like soaring food prices, climate changes or tense geopolitics. But it can manifest border-crossing creativity as one of the most important approaches to solving common challenges in the future.

The Arctic Subcircle orchestra is an abstract musical idea, yet not a free fantasy. If you draw a circle on a world map passing through Caucasus, West Africa and Arctic Norway, you will get an Arctic Subcircle. The circle will cover the Polar circle and touch the equator. The radius of the circle includes the cultural connections between West Africa, the Moorish Spain and beyond. In the southeast, the Subcircle is crossing the ancient cultures and caravan routes of Caucasus. From here the circle turns northeast towards the Arctic coast. No archeologist will ever be able to dig up the sounds of the encounters of different cultures along the Subcircle; music is not preserved in the soil like pieces of pottery. Fragments of melodies and rhythms are passed over from one generation to the next like pieces of a forgotten jigsaw puzzle. Enjoy 16 of the best world music performers in Scandinavia, Africa and Caucasus!

The concert is preceded by a presentation of border-crossing art practices in the Barents Region and Caucasus by LUBA KUZOVNIKOVA (Pikene pa Broen, Kirkenes) and OSMAN KAVALA (Anadolu Kultur, Istanbul). Being aware of the contrast between these two border regions, they collaborate and use contemporary art and culture to interpret border issues.

The project is a co-operation between Pikene pa Broen, Festspillene i Nord-Norge, Anadolu Kultur and Institusjonen Fritt Ord, Oslo. Transborder Concert is the opening event for the 19th EFC Annual General Assembly and Conference “Fostering Creativity”.
