Border-Crossing Exercises II – Arctic Subcircle

30 January 2008, Kirkenes, Norway

MORY KANTÉ, ARTO TUNCBOYACIYAN, RAGNHILD FUREBOTTEN and an international orchestra. Composed and arranged by KNUT KRISTIANSEN.

If you draw a circle that goes through Kirkenes, Jerevan in Armenia and Mali in West-Africa on a world map, you get an arctic subcircle. The circle represents an abstract musical idea, but it is not taken out of the air. The radius of the circle follows ethnic traces originated from West-Africa to Spain and further north. In southeast the circle crosses the old high cultures and caravan routes in Caucasus, before it turns northwest. Our Arctic Subcircle is rooted in the idea of making new music inspired by music traditions from West-Africa, Caucasus and Northern Norway. What will be completely new and what will fall into long gone music pathways? A world music experiment where compositions and arrangements by Knut Kristiansen are the starting point for a music production process with 3 star soloists and an international orchestra with 12 musicians.

In cooperation with Festspillene i Nord-Norge.
